An evening of shared energy and musical dialogue
The event was organised by Grzegorz Lesiak on behalf of the L.A.S. Listening and Sounding Foundation, in cooperation with Centrum Kultury w Lublinie and Lublin Jazz. The concert was supported by funding from the Minister of Culture and National Heritage as part of the “Music” programme, implemented by the National Institute of Music and Dance, with media support from Jazz Forum, JazzKultura, JazzPress, Radio Lublin, Radio Centrum, Radio Free and Dziennik Wschodni. Free admission allowed the audience to experience improvised music directly and encounter artists representing different strands of the European experimental music scene. The seventeenth edition once again confirmed that the strength of the series lies in encounter — between musicians, between artists and audiences, and between different ways of thinking about contemporary music. A meeting between the local scene and the European improvisation community
One of the key values of Muzyka Ucha Trzeciego is its ongoing connection between the local music community and artists representing the international improvisation scene. The seventeenth edition once again demonstrated how direct encounters between different experiences, generations and artistic approaches can become a starting point for creating something entirely new. Here, music was not a performance of previously prepared material, but a creative process in which every sound emerged from attentive listening, responses to fellow musicians and the energy of the moment. As a result, both sets developed their own distinct dramaturgy and character, remaining one-off events possible only within those particular configurations.
Two international line-ups and music created live
The first set brought together British saxophonist Adrian Northover, Lublin-based double bassist Karol “Kolor” Gadzało, and drummer Hubert Zemler. The encounter between three musicians with different experiences and artistic backgrounds created a space for free interaction, sonic exploration and open form. Northover’s experience of the London improvisation scene met the energy of Poland’s experimental music scene, resulting in a musical narrative developing without a predetermined script.
The second set featured Italian drummer Marcello Magliocchi, pianist and multi-instrumentalist Piotr Zabrodzki, and Lublin-based trumpeter Jan Michalec. Their encounter brought together experiences rooted in free jazz, contemporary music, electronics and free improvisation. Each musician contributed their own distinctive sonic language to the shared space, while attentive listening and immediate responses to emerging impulses allowed them to create a premiere musical form unfolding in real time.
The seventeenth edition of musical encounters and improvisation
The seventeenth edition of the Muzyka Ucha Trzeciego series once again brought together artists connected with contemporary improvised music in Lublin. For over a decade, the series has created a space for spontaneous encounters, artistic dialogue and the free exchange of musical ideas, with each concert becoming a unique event that cannot be recreated in exactly the same form. This time, the audience at the Chamber Hall of the Centrum Kultury in Lublin witnessed two premiere sets created especially for the occasion by musicians from the United Kingdom, Italy and Poland.
