A Continuation of “Images of Memory”

The event also continued the programme connected with the photographic exhibition Obrazy pamięci (Images of Memory), presented as part of Muzyka Ucha Trzeciego. Bringing together photographs documenting the history of the series with another improvised concert created a natural continuity between memories of previous encounters and new artistic experiences. Tomasz Gawdzik’s photographs recalled the artists, concerts and situations that have shaped the identity of the project over the years, while the Sunday concert added another chapter to this ongoing story. Once again, Cafe Lulu became a place where past and present met, and where documentation of earlier events coexisted with music being created in the here and now.

Organizer: Grzegorz Lesiak, Fundacja L.A.S. Listening and Sounding. The project was co-financed by the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage as part of the “Music” programme, implemented by the National Institute of Music and Dance. Photos: Tomek Gawdzik.

Improvisation as a Shared Experience

The concert unfolded without a predetermined script, with each musical gesture emerging from attentive listening and the musicians’ immediate responses to one another. Tobias Klein’s bass clarinet and Andrius Dereviancenko’s tenor saxophone met Rafał Staniak’s bass guitar, Dominik Plein’s drums and Stanisław Warchoł’s playing. This combination of instruments allowed the music to develop through constantly shifting structures – from sparse and focused passages to more intense moments of collective expression. Here, improvisation was not simply a performance technique, but a way of experiencing music together, in which silence, space and the reactions of the other participants were as important as individual musical gestures.

Amsterdam – Lublin: A Meeting of Different Experiences

The lineup featured Tobias Klein and Andrius Dereviancenko, acclaimed musicians and composers who are active members of Amsterdam’s improvised music scene. Klein, playing bass clarinet, and Dereviancenko, on tenor saxophone, were joined by Lublin-based musicians Stanisław Warchoł, Rafał Staniak and Dominik Plein. Bringing these different experiences together created a space for spontaneous dialogue, allowing diverse musical languages to interact and influence one another. Particularly significant was the meeting between the international experience of artists connected with the Amsterdam scene and the energy of Lublin’s local musical community.

MUT#16 | 14.06.2026 | The Third Ear Music | New Wave | Exhibition Continuation

On 14 June 2026, the patio of Cafe Lulu on Lublin’s Market Square once again became a meeting place for improvised music, art and the local community. The event brought together musicians connected with the international improvisation scene and artists well known to Lublin audiences. In the welcoming atmosphere of Cafe Lulu, music, conversation and visual art came together, creating a space for an open and spontaneous exchange of experiences.

A New Wave of Musical Encounters

For years, Cafe Lulu has been a meeting point for people seeking new artistic situations and unconventional forms of participation. It was in this atmosphere that another edition of Muzyka Ucha Trzeciego took place, bringing together musicians from the international improvisation scene with artists closely connected to Lublin’s musical community. The meeting had an open and relaxed character, with the music developing in direct response to the space, the audience and the energy of the place. For several hours, the patio of Cafe Lulu became an intimate stage where the boundary between performers and listeners remained fluid.
